The 19th Century History of East Marlborough Township and Unionville in Maps

The growth of agriculture, and social and commercial prominence of East Marlborough Township and Unionville is mirrored in maps from the 19th century.   A map published by Painter and Bowen in 1847 identifies approximately a dozen religious and commercial enterprises in the Township, and Unionville as having an Academy, Presbyterian Church, and Friends Meeting.   A map published by T. J. Kennedy in 1860 shows the names of property owners and locations of structures indicating the growing importance of agriculture and supporting trades in the Township.  The Atlas of Chester County Pennsylvania was published by A.R Whitmer, Safe Harbor, Lancaster PA in 1873 and shows roads, rivers and streams, municipal and property boundaries, and buildings.  The map of East Marlborough Township (Plate 27) contains an insert showing the village of Unionville in greater detail.  A unique feature of the 1873 Whitmer map is a Key that identifies the owners of specific properties and their occupations – it is difficult to imagine a 19th century commercial enterprise not amongst those represented in the Township and Unionville.  The Breous Official Series of Farm Maps Chester County Pennsylvania was published by W. H. Kirk & Co., Philadelphia in 1883.  The map of East Marlborough Township (Plate 201) identifies then current property owners but without their occupations.  A unique feature of the 1883 Breous atlas is a separate plate (122) containing maps of the villages of Unionville, Malvern, and Hamorton.  The differences in cartographer’s details of the Village of Unionville as depicted in 1873 and 1883 compared to 1847 and 1860 further support that Unionville was an important and growing hub of social, commercial, and agricultural activities in the late 19th century.

What followed was gradual decline and stagnation. Nearby towns in townships with transportation expanded and grew, drawing business and social events away from East Marlborough Township and Unionville. The Industrial Revolution of the late 19th and early 20th centuries would continue to spread and develop until goods which were being produced on a small scale in East Marlborough Township and Unionville would no longer be practical and more cheaply produced in larger towns.

By the mid-20th century Unionville had returned to being a quiet country village as it had been in the early 19th century.
